Background info: Bruno de Souza is a 3rd-generation coffee farmer operating in the Mantiqueira de Minas region of Brazil. Where most of Brazil is characterized by sprawling estates and massive agribusiness, Mantiqueira de Minas is largely made up of smallholder farmers. Bruno grows on 4.5 hectares, which is tiny by Brazilian standards. The more mountainous terrain means that producers still handpick cherries, as compared to the flatland coffee plantations who can pick mechanically. All this, paired with the higher elevation, has led to Mantiqueira de Minas designation as an Indication of Origin (similar to Denomination of Origin in the wine world) for the unique cup quality of the coffees from this region.
This lot consistes entirely of Arara, a variety that has taken off in popularity in Brazil dude to its taste profile and elevated cup quality. A classic natural Brazil profile, this coffee brings a rich dark chocolatey base with the comfort of toasted nuts, and a subtle sweetness of dried fruit.
