Description:
We bought two coffees from Finca La Pradera this year - a classic washed Caturra and this crisp and bright Geisha. Coffee shrubs at the Lovo brothers’ farms, Bella Aurora and La Pradera, are grown under a canopy of shade trees that allow through just 30-40% sunlight. The brothers mainly grow classic varieties like Caturra and Catuaí on the farm, but they’ve recently started expanding into more boutique cherries like this Geisha. Originally an Ethiopian landrace variety, Geisha gained popularity on the lush estates in Panama, before making its way all around the world. It was the original “fancy” coffee, but it still breaks records for highest cup scores and is used by championship-level baristas. This level of fame has been good and bad, in my opinion. On the one hand, it’s shown people what coffee can be and undoubtedly progressed the industry away from its cheap, commodity origins. But on the other, now everyone expects Geisha to be 95 points and taste like a New Years Eve fireworks display. Spoiler – this is not that Geisha. It’s delicious, balanced, and has elegant floral aromatics, but it’s not selling for $30,000/kg at auction. If you ask me, a clean and crushable Geisha you can drink every day without taking out a bank loan is pretty special, so we hope you enjoy!
